In the first year after building a new web site, expect to make some changes based on customer feedback. After that, be sure to review your site periodically to keep up with the competition.

Expect Changes In The First Three Months

In the first three months after your new web site goes live, you will probably get the most feedback from your customers. At that point you will realize that your site can be fine tuned a bit here and there to get things just right. Most changes will be minor, but there may be a few more significant tasks as well. So expect to make some changes during this time as your customer base gets to know and use your new site.

Check Your Search Engine Rankings

Give it a month or two for the search engines to find and index your new web site, and then see how well you rank for your specific keywords. If you are in the top page or two of the search results, then that is a great start. Keep monitoring your ranking, and see how it progresses over time. If you are not getting good search engine rankings, then consult with your web designer on additional strategies to increase your ranking.

Within The First Year

Once all the fine tuning is complete, you may want to think about adding some additional elements to your web site, that did not make it in its initial launch. You may, for example, add a new feature or two that you think will add to the value of the site. Or you may add a new section of content, now that you have more time to write text for the web site. Prioritize your list, and add those components that will make your web site better.

Then Evaluate Your Site Annually

Every year or so, re-evaluate your web site and update it with any changes or improvements that are necessary. Pay particular attention to your competitor’s web sites and make sure that you are keeping pace with their improvements. Or, get ahead of the game, and introduce new features before your competition.

Every 5 Years

After about 5 years, you’ll want to take a serious look at your current web site and see if a total redesign is in order. Read our previous article on this topic for ideas on what to look for.

Conclusion

The feedback you get in the first few months after the web site is launched will help you fine tune the web site to meet the needs of your customers. Don’t forget to check your search engine rankings, and modify your SEO strategy accordingly. As the site matures, think about adding new features or content, and continually research your competition to make sure you are keeping pace with things.
